More progress!
Here's what got done today:
To the right of the walkway will be grass - it's just covered up with dirt right now. Does anyone have a favorite low-growing plant that I might like to plant in between the stepping stones? So far I'm thinking thyme, and the mail woman suggested a variety of mint. If I could find some kind of dwarf chamomile that might be a good choice too, but I'm sure there must be other things I could consider.

Stick with thyme. If you plant mint you'll never get rid of it.
Oh, and it looks FANTASTIC! Want to come over and do my yard now? We have a portable AC to cool you off when you're done. :-)
